Fat Loss Expert Tom Venuto

Fat loss expert and natural bodybuilder Tom Venuto has
released a New Hardcover Book called “The Body Fat Solution”
which has health-conscious men and women across the Internet
breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Finally, something new and completely different is on
the bookstore shelves that could completely change your
attitude about how you approach losing fat and keeping
it off.

FREE – Download Your Copy OF… AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BODY FAT SOLUTION at www.TheBodyFatSolution.com

What makes this so different than the rest of the crop of
2010 “diet” books? Aren’t all these books more or less
the same?

Not this one.

We all know that we gain fat when we take in more
calories than we burn. But we’re not always rational
creatures when it comes to food and exercise.

Recognizing the emotional and psychological factors that
sabotage success and cause weight relapse, Venuto’s new
hardcover Book, The Body Fat Solution (Avery/Penguin Group)
hones in on the real causes of body-fat.

This book hands you a scientifically-sound plan based on
*principles* not current fads, to take back control of
your body and end emotional eating for good.

In The Body Fat Solution, Venuto outlines the 5 principles
that will retrain your mind and body for automatic success.

Determined to help you keep the fat off for good, Tom shows
you how to:

* End emotional eating and stop diet self sabotage

* Re-program your mind to develop “auto-pilot” success habits

* Go beyond goal setting by crafting a powerful “vision”
that motivates you for life

* Eat healthy, delicious food almost unconsciously and
shed the pounds almost effortlessly

* Increase your metabolism and break any fat loss plateau

* Reshape your body through lean muscle training for a
strong core and toned frame

* Build a supportive social network of friends, family,
and mentors to help motivate you and keep you on the path.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BODY FAT SOLUTION

* The Wall street journal says that The body fat solution is
more “attitude adjustment” than diet.

* Steve Yu, producer of ‘Inspired The Movie’ says, “it will
change the paradigm in how we view weight loss…”

* Judith beck, PhD, Cognitive psychologist says, “Read this book -
if you want to lose weight, improve your body and your health,
and keep up these improvements for life. Tom Venuto gives it
to you straight, basing his program on solid science and
common sense. You will come away with a new feeling of
inspiration and a new action plan to get you started and
keep you on track to help you reach your goals-and then beyond.”

* Motivational Speaker Brian Tracy says:

“Tom Venuto’s Body Fat Solution is one of the most important
books on health, happiness and physical well-being ever written.
In this fast-moving, easily usable series of methods and techniques,
you learn how to enjoy superb physical fitness, achieve your ideal
weight, and feel terrific about yourself both emotionally and
spiritually.”

* Top trainer Alwyn Cosgrove says:

“In 2003 Tom Venuto changed the fat loss world with his ebook
Burn the Fat – Feed the Muscle… In 2009 he’s done it again
with the Body Fat Solution. The World’s expert on fat loss speaks
- I listen. I’ve often said – Fat loss doesn’t start with an
exercise program, a diet or a supplement… It starts with a
mindset shift. That mindset shift begins with Tom’s new book.
If you want to change your body – you need to change your mind.
And to do that – you need Tom Venuto.”

* Library journal, the 132-year old publication read by
100,000 librarians, said:

“Venuto gets at all the physical, psychological, and even
sociological aspects of overeating, outlining a program of
mental, cardio, and strength training stressing accountability
and self-control. Nothing fluffy about this book: just well-
founded scientific research and clearly illustrated direction.”

You’ll be happy that you did.

Sincerely,

Greg

P.S. – Go grab the book that Jim Foster of diet-blog says will be
“the best seller of the new year!”

This transcript is from a full one-hour tele-seminar where Tom’s site manager picked Tom’s brain about what’s inside his new book and how you can use it to get leaner, healthier and stronger in 2009 and beyond.

QUESTION: Hi Tom. Here’s my question: I have asked several other experts about this and so far no one seems to give me an EXACT answer. Some trainers tell me I have to go steady and nonstop for 30 minutes straight or more to burn fat. Others tell me I have to do intervals and they have to be in a certain ratio of sprint to recovery. I’m getting tired of my cardio ritual and would like a change. I love basketball. I could play for an hour and enjoy every minute of it, and I FEEL like I’m getting a good workout doing it. But is it really the same as something like a good run?

ANSWER: I just plugged basketball into my calories burned calculator and it says that if you weigh 185 pounds, moderate basketball (full court game play) burns 839 calories per hour. Moderate basketball (non-game) is 528 calories per hour. I’m guessing “non-game” means either half court or just casual play with your buddies.

Either way, 528-839 calories burned per hour sounds like a good fat burner to me – especially the all-out, full court basketball. Don’t you agree?Basketball also gives you a wide variety of different physical challenges and intensity levels – running down the court, jumping, pivoting, shooting – and you said you enjoy it.

If you feel guilty when you finish your game, as if you didn’t burn enough, when the game is over, just run intervals up and down the court… do about 6-10 of them or until you yak. (just kidding). If I were to clarify my position on cardio training in my fat loss book today, I don’t think I would change my recommendations much. I’m a very strong proponent of exercise and becoming more active to burn fat rather than just cutting calories. However, I might change some of the language to make it clearer that fat loss is about BURNING calories and that your choices for HOW to burn them are virtually infinite.

The problem, in my opinion?

The word “aerobics” sets people off… especially the macho guys. There’s an instant emotional connotation carried in the word “aerobics, and it’s negative for many people. “Aerobics” is also usually a very narrow definition making for a fairly small list of choices.

I like the word “cardio” a little better, because it’s a little broader, but even “cardio” carries with it some pre-conceived notions and it’s unclear whether various types of “cardio” exercise are good fat burners.
Is basketball cardio? I suppose it depends on your definition.

Is basketball a good fat burner? Sure. But you might not think so if you were inflexible about how you define exercise and training.

What I would do if I wanted to most clearly define what makes a good fat burner, I’d recommend that you focus on:

“INCREASING ENERGY EXPENDITURE” (BURN MORE!)

This description leaves the choice of activity up to your own personal interpretation and personal preference.

Is 500 to 800 calories per hour a lot of energy to expend? You bet. Better still is the fact that you enjoy it. I know, I know, everyone wants to be told EXACTLY what to do; how many minutes, what intensity, what type, what heart rate, blah, blah, blah, and gurus are infamous for being dogmatic about their systems as the “best way” or “only way.” But what if Dan loves basketball and Tom loves the Stepmill and Joe loves to jog and Kyle likes calisthenics and John likes kettlebells and Suzy likes kickboxing? Then what?

By changing your language and focusing on increasing “energy expenditure” (Burning more), that should change your conception of what efficient fat burning exercise is.

DEFINITION OF GOOD FAT BURNING EXERCISE =
High # of total calories burned/expended

DEFINITION OF GREAT FAT BURNING EXERCISE =
High # of total calories burned/expended and high # expended per unit of time

DEFINITION OF WHOOP-ASS FAT BURNING EXERCISE =
High # of total calories burned and high # burned in a short period of time and you love doing it! It’s play time!

Fat oxidation and excess post exercise energy expenditure and all that other scientific stuff (that I could bore you to death talking about) does matter, but your primary focus should be on:

1) Burning as many calories as you can in the time you have.
2) Finding something you like to do.
3) Focusing on RESULTS above all else… Is your body fat decreasing or not?Last, but not least, don’t forget that optimal fat loss is achieved with a three-part approach including nutrition, weight training and “cardio” training. I’m not saying that basketball should replace your strength training. I’m suggesting that basketball or other sports can be a perfectly viable alternative to traditional aerobics or cardio if they’re high energy cost activities.

Using my new definition for fat burning exercise should help lift the fog of confusion that has been created by only defining fat burning exercise as”aerobics” or “cardio.”

The word “Aerobics” is somewhat restrictive in scope and definition. The possibilites for “expending energy” are endless. So now, go forth and BURN THE FAT… however you choose to do it… just do it!

Train hard and expect success,

A Review Of Tom Venuto’s Burn The Fat Inner Circle (The Internet’s Premier Fat Loss Support Community!)

I just took a real hard look at Tom Venuto’s member’s-only website called “Burn The Fat Inner Circle” and I have to say that I am very impressed with what he has put together.

This site is huge and contains some really powerful resources for people trying to lose fat and get in great shape.

This site, just like Tom’s other sites, has very high quality materials that will help his member’s burn more fat and really achieve the results they are looking for.

Before I share with you the insider-details of what the Inner Circle offers let me fill you in on who Tom Venuto is just in case you don’t know who he is.

Tom Venuto is a well known “Fat Loss Guru” — and a natural bodybuilder himself (can you say 3% bodyfat!!!). He’s the author of “Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle” which just happens to be the best fat loss and diet e-book I have ever read. (I reviewed Burn The Fat some time ago. If you’re in the market for a learner body then you should read Tom’s E-book).

Ok, back to my review of the Inner Circle website…

Burn the Fat Inner Circle is in fact a membership site. That means that yes; it does cost money to join. You may be wondering why you should even consider paying for a membership here if you have access to all kinds of free information online.

It’s a good question for sure and one that I asked too before I reviewed Tom’s site.

There’s a lot of free stuff on the internet and many free forums too but let’s be honest, a lot these free sites are pure garbage. For example, some of the free forums online are not closely moderated and I have had experiences were other forum members completely trashed other members even swearing at them! Not much of a supportive community.

The vast majority of the stuff online that isn’t complete garbage is slanted one way or another to sell you something. So it takes time to find real, helpful fat loss information.

Finding good teachers and supportive people can be a challenge on some of the free forums and sites but after checking out Tom’s fat loss support community I must say that I was impressed with how supportive the moderators and other members were.

I have always been a believer that finding good ‘mentors’ (people that have done what you want to do) has really helped me to achieve success at a faster rate. From what I have seen, the Inner Circle has a phenomenal group of fat loss mentors that can you help you get your questions answered.

Being part of a community of like-minded, qualified people can be a real motivating factor and the Burn The Fat Inner Circle contains a member’s forum — with thousands of members. These folks aren’t going to ‘flame’ you, call you stupid for asking questions, and they are not there to sell you supplements or other garbage.

And best of all, topics are moderated by professionals with impressive credentials (some top fitness professionals and fat loss success stories there to help you out).

Wrapping this up… joining a membership program can make very good sense… provided it’s the right program — and I assure you, this one is top notch.

OK, before I tell you what you’ll find inside the member’s-only area of the Burn The Fat Inner Circle, let me answer one last and very obvious question…

“Do I need to be on Tom’s Burn The Fat program in order to join this fat loss support community?”

My answer is absolutely not. There is a ton of great material in this site that will be of benefit to anyone — no matter what diet you are currently on.

To be fair though… it appears (by viewing posts in the forums) that many members are either on Tom’s plan or are at least familiar with it. So you’ll fit into this community better if you’re at least familiar with Tom’s Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle lifestyle program.

Let’s get to the good stuff shall we?

So what will you find in Tom’s Burn The Fat Inner Circle?

Oh boy… where to start?

Well, it’s all there really — everything you could possibly need on your fat loss quest.

I’m sure the biggest benefit for you is going to be the forums. They’re full of activity and supportive answers from real people that ‘walk the walk and talk the talk.”

The forum members are from all walks of life, all motivated by the same thing (and ready to lend a helpful hand to their fellow community members).

And of course, there’s a ton of info there as well…

Here are some of the coolest features that the Inner Circle offers:

• Tom Venuto’s Burn The Fat Show (A Members-Only MP3 Audio Program) that really has some powerful tips delivered by Tom Venuto himself • Audio interviews with top fitness and fat loss experts (I download a few of these and put them on my IPOD — very inspiring to listen to during my cardio workout today!) • Amazing fat loss success stories – learn how others just like you achieved their impressive body transformations (These interviews are great and I got some really cool takeaways from these people who have taken Tom’s program and ran with it!)

•	Ever-expanding library of exclusive (not published elsewhere) articles; some really meaty stuff!

• Exclusive (not published elsewhere) Burn The Fat program Q & A that are great if you are going through a fat loss program and want your questions answered. • Library of downloadable e-books and e-reports for members only — My goodness! Tom sells these special reports and e-books to non-members and if you were to buy them one by one you would pay over $379!

• Diet and menu tracking and planning tools that are PRICELESS!! I figured out exactly how many calories I needed to take in for each meal for my fat loss plan; so cool!

•	Calorie and nutrient information at your fingertips

•	Weight loss and fitness news headlines that keep me up to date with the latest fat loss tips

•	Community photo galleries where Tom’s members post before, after and progress pictures — so inspiring!

•	Delicious taste-tested fat-burning recipes — I highly recommend Tom’s “Quick N’ Easy Salmon Burgers” — DELICIOUS!

• NO B.S. Science-based and unbiased supplement reviews (I stopped taking one of the supplements I was spending about $50 bucks per month on because of one of these reviews!)

• And there is even more that I am running out of space to cover here… The tagline of the Inner Circle is that it is supposed to be the Internet’s Premier Fat Loss Support Community, and having checked it all out, I’d have to say I agree 100%.

Bottom line?

Tom Venuto is a credible, qualified professional who knows his stuff. More than that perhaps, is the fact that he has a genuine concern for the people his is helping and is concerned with taking care of the people that enter his program above all else.

Tom has helped thousands of people shed thousands of pounds of fat and he is not like some online marketers out to take advantage of the hopes and dreams of honest people looking to make some positive changes in there life.

You’ll see no supplements for sale here and you’ll be impressed with the honesty and integrity that Tom has infused into the Inner Circle site — it really is something special and my recommendation is to check it out.

His “Inner Circle” is a premier quality resource — well worth the money, and a benefit to anyone, anywhere, of any age who is trying to lose weight naturally and permanently.

I highly recommend the Burn the Fat Inner Circle.

Sincerely,

Greg

PS — Don’t take my word for it… just see what some people are saying about the Inner Circle:

“My initial weight: 425+ lbs… Walking 10-15 steps was killer then… Today: 218 Lbs of fat put to rest! It changed my very foundation in life; there is absolutely no feeling like having control of your entire life again… there’s just no price you can put on it” –Mike Boyd, Inner Circle Member

“One day, while I was looking through a pack of photos, I came across a picture of me… and I barely recognized myself! At 5′ 1″, and150 pounds I had to face the fact that I was Forty and Fat. I had no idea that I had “let myself go” so much. So I decided to make some changes. Somehow, I happened upon Burn The Fat and ordered. It was the best money I ever spent. Today, I am 106 pounds, and I wear a size 0 (zero!)I am a personal trainer helping other women achieve their goals. I am a mom that can keep up with my kids. My self-confidence has soared. I actually decided to compete in two figure competitions this year – something I never would have dreamed possible before!

Sincerely, Aida Miodus, Inner Circle Member

“I used the BURN THE FAT program to not only lose 137 pounds, but it also changed my entire life and the life of my family. BURN THE FAT has also helped me achieve emotional, physical and financial goals I never thought possible. I believe that your entire success can be traced back to something as simple as desire. I need you to ask yourself one simple question – ‘How Bad Do You Want It?’ If you want it bad the battle is on and you can win, you just have to keep that desire fueled.

Sincerely,

Mike Ogorek, Inner Circle Member

Why Is Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle The Best Selling E-Book In Internet History, With Thousands Of Satisfied (And Now Fat-Free) Users In 133 Countries from Algeria to Zimbabwe?

Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle is the #1 best selling diet and fitness ebook in the history of the Internet. In fact, it’s one of the best selling e-books on ANY subject in the history of the Internet -… And there’s a reason why…

It’s because thousands of women and men of every age are burning off BODY FAT – not muscle or water weight – and they’re doing it naturally, without supplements, pills or “magic potions,” simply by using the proven, scientifically-accurate and common-sense advice found inside this amazing diet and fitness guidebook.

Tom Venuto, a respected fat loss expert, natural bodybuilder, and personal trainer, has not just pumped out yet another “diet program” into an already over-saturated market. Tom’s Burn the Fat can be more accurately described as a “Fat Loss Bible.” It is quite simply one of the most complete, detailed, and precise guides to fat loss you will ever read. What makes it so much different than other weight loss publications on the market?

Well first of all, it’s not a “weight loss” program, it’s a “fat” loss program. This may seem like semantics or wordplay at first, but once you’ve read just the first three chapters, there will be no doubt in your mind that pursuing “weight loss” is not only the wrong goal, it may be the reason that you’ve failed to reach and maintain your ideal body weight. Burn The Fat shows you exactly why it’s fat you must lose, not “weight” (which includes muscle, water and other lean tissue) and then goes on to show you exactly how to do it.

Secondly, what makes Burn The Fat different is the amount of attention that is paid to each and every element of successful, healthy, permanent fat loss. Burn The Fat not only thoroughly dispels the lies, myths and fallacies surrounding a very confusing subject, it is simply the most detailed book about fat loss ever written. By reading Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, (or better yet, “studying it”), you will learn more about fat loss than you could from an entire semester of nutrition classes or from an entire shelf of maintstream diet publications at your local bookstore.

You may be wondering, “Is this a low carb diet? A high protein diet? A high fat diet? what type of program IS it???” The truth is that Burn the Fat is neither a high protein diet, or a low carb diet. That’s because with the information in this book, you will be able to easily determine your own ideal protein, carbs and fats ratio. You will be able to analyze your body type (are you an endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph?), you will determine your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate, or the amount of “maintenance” calories your body requires every day), and you will find out whether you are carb tolerant or carb intolerant.

This personalized approach makes perfect sense because each of us is a unique individual and no two people are exactly alike in terms of body physiology and personal goals.

One of the most powerful chapters in the book is the first one called, “How To Set Powerful, Compelling Goals That Will Propel You Forward and Charge You Up with Unstoppable Motivation.” In this chapter, you will learn what is probably the ultimate secret to burning fat and getting in shape… and it has nothing to do with diets, supplements or training programs. There’s also a great quote in this chapter from the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi…

“The dictionary is the only place success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must all pay for success.” That line does a nice job of expressing the “no quick fix” philosophy behind the entire book. In the rest of the book, you’ll learn the complete and exact mechanics of fat loss – explained on both a scientific and a practical level (which you can easily apply in your own daily life in terms of what to eat and how to exercise to burn fat).

If there is any drawback to the Burn The Fat ebook, it’s that it contains so much information, that some readers may find it a bit overwhelming. Those who are looking for a “cliff’s Note’s” quick start type of fat loss program, might be a bit intimated at first. The good part however, is that even these types of readers can feel confident and assured that it will be worth the effort because this will literally be the last book they ever have to buy on the subject.

Who will benefit most from Burn the Fat?

In the broadest sense, anyone and everyone who needs to lose weight will benefit from Burn The Fat. Men, women, bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts, and especially motivated individuals and avid readers will love this book. Although it was written by a bodybuilder, this book is certainly NOT just for bodybuilders.

You will find no “30 lbs. in 30 days” miracles at work here. It’s all about intelligent eating choices, planning, hard work and lifestyle change. As Burn The Fat author Tom Venuto says,…

“Burn the Fat is simple, but it’s not easy.”

In terms of graphic design, Burn the Fat is a clean and professionally formatted PDF e-book. It’s a little on the plain side, being just text, but that makes it ideal for printing and reading in the comfort of a favorite chair. Because of it’s size, it does require a robust printer and a good stack of paper.

Initially, some people thought that Burn the Fat was priced a little on the high side because $39 might seem like a fair chunk of money for an ebook download. However, after they saw the amount of information contained within Burn The Fat’s 340 pages, along with the special bonus ebooks and reports that come with it, they said it was not only worth the $39, but many times that amount.

As with any how-to publication, you’re not really paying for the materials used to compile the document, but for what the information can do for you, and clearly, this publication has changed many lives and the hundreds of testimonials and success stories found on the Burn The Fat website are proof of that (I recommend you take a look at that “testimonials” page on the Burn The Fat website because some of the before and after transformations are simply incredible – as well as inspiring).

The Bottom line?

Anyone looking for a quick fix solution to fat loss, anyone looking to be told fairy-tales, and anyone looking for a “magic bullet” offered by the likes of body wraps, fat burning pills, diet shakes, or “fat-burning” creams and gels might be best advised to steer clear of Burn the Fat.

On the other hand, anyone tired of “spinning their wheels” going nowhere, who wants the truth about fat loss and who is ready and willing to put in the hard work and discipline and make the lifestyle changes necessary to get a fat free body, will find Burn The fat to be one of the best investments they ever made in their lives.

The controversies over cardio for fat loss are endless: steady state versus intervals, fed versus fasted, long and easy versus short and intense, and so on. Obviously there is a lot of interest in cardio training and how to do it right. Sadly, most people are still doing 2 things terribly wrong and it’s killing their results…… As best as I can figure, there are two major reasons why people are still mucking up their cardio programs for fat loss.

REASON #1: NOT ENOUGH FOCUS ON TOTAL CALORIES BURNED

Most people aren’t burning enough darn calories.

Why? Well, I guess they are too busy worrying about the “proper” type of exercise (which machine or activity), the mode (steady state or intervals), the “optimal” ratio of intervals, or the “best” duration.

Some people coast along on the treadmill at 2.3 miles per hour or some similar sloth-like pace and they think that just by hitting a TIME goal, such as 45 or 60 minutes, that with “X” duration completed, they are assured to get the results they want.

On the other extreme, we have folks who have found or created some mega-intense, super-duper short training protocol like the “4-minute wonder workout from Japan.” Just because the workout is high in intensity and it is performed in intervals, they too think they are assured to get the results they want.

What’s missing in both cases is the realization that total fat loss over time is a function of total calories burned over time (assuming you don’t blow your diet, of course).

AND…

Total calories burned is a product of INTENSITY times DURATION, not intensity OR duration.

Too much focus on one variable at the exclusion of the other can lead to a less than optimal total calorie burn and disappointing results. And remember, intensity and duration are *variables* not absolutes! (“Variable” means you can change them… even if your “guru” says you can’t!)

When you understand the relationship and interplay between INTENSITY X DURATION you will find a “SWEET SPOT” where the product of those variables produces the maximal calorie burn and maximum fat loss, based on your current health condition and your need for time efficiency.

REASON #2: TOO MUCH FOCUS ON WHAT TYPE OF CALORIES BURNED

As best as I can figure, there is one whopper of a mistake that is still KILLING most people’s cardio programs and that is…

Way too much focus on WHAT you are burning during the workout – fats or carbohydrates – also known as “substrate utilization.”

This idea comes from the notorious “fat burning zone” myth which actually tells people to exercise SLOWER and LESS intensely to burn more fat.

Hold on a minute. Pop quiz. Which workout burns more calories?

(A) A 30 minute leisurely stroll through the park
(B) A 30 minute, sweat-pouring, heart-pounding, lung-burning run?

Like, DUH!

And yet we have trainers, authors and infomercial gurus STILL telling us we have to slow down if we want to burn more fat??? Bizarre.

The reason people still buy it is because the “fat burning zone” myth sounds so plausible because of two little science facts:

The higher your intensity, the more carbs you burn during the workout

The lower your intensity, the more fat you burn during the workout

And that’s the problem. You should be focusing on total calories and total fat burned during the workout and all day long, not just what type or percentage of fuel you are burning during the workout.

It’s not that fat oxidation doesn’t matter, but what if you have a high percentage of fat oxidation but an extremely low number of calories burned?

If you really want to be in the “fat burn zone,” you could sit on your couch all day long and that will keep you there quite nicely because “couch sitting” is a really low intensity (“fat-burning”) activity.

(Of course, “couch sitting” only burns 37 calories per half hour…)

HERE’S THE FAT-BURNING SOLUTION!

In both cases, the solution to burning more fat is drop dead simple: Focus your attention on how you can burn more TOTAL calories during your workout and all day long.

If you want to burn more fat, burn more calories and you can do that by manipulating ANY of the variables : intensity, duration and also frequency.

If you build your training program around this concept, you will be on the right track almost every time.

BUT WAIT – THERE IS MORE TO IT…

Naturally, we could argue that it’s not quite this simple and that there are hundreds of other reasons why your cardio program might not be working… and I would agree, of course. But on the exercise side, the ideas above should be foremost in your mind.

On the nutrition side, you have to get your act together there too.

For example, many people increase their food intake at the same time as they start a cardio training program thereby putting back in every calorie they burned during the workout! Then some of them have the nerve to say, “SEE, cardio doesn’t work!”

Incidentally, this is the exact reason that a few studies show that adding cardio or aerobic training to a diet “did not improve fat loss”: It’s not because the cardio didn’t work, it was because the researchers didn’t control for diet and the subjects ate more!!

It should go without saying that nutrition is the foundation on which every fat loss program is built.

Choose the combination of type, intensity, duration and frequency that suits your lifestyle and preferences the best, and WORK THE VARIABLES to get the fat loss results you want, but whichever cardio program you choose, remember that a solid fat burning nutrition program, such as Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle is necessary to help you make the most of it.

Train hard and expect success,

You’ve probably seen the advertisements:

“Drink wu long tea and lose a jeans size every 7 days!”…

“Burn 20 lbs of fat in 30 days with wu long tea!” …

Maybe you even watched Oprah a few years ago when Dr. Perricone said that switching your coffee for green tea would help you take off the pounds.

You may have also read or watched countless news stories which say how healthy it is to drink green tea.

The odds are good that if you’re interested in improving your health and losing fat, you probably either drink tea, take a green tea supplement or you’ve at least thought about it.

But what if I told you that most of the fat reducing claims for green tea were absolute, total BS, based on misinterpretation or deliberate misreporting of the research?

Unfortunately, it’s true. If you’ve bought green tea based on the claim that it causes large reductions in body fat, then you have been scammed.

Here are the facts:

Green tea DOES stimulate your metabolism.

However, the research is very unclear about what kind of impact this small, short term increase in metabolism will have on your bodyweight in the long term.

In the most often quoted study (Dulloo, 1999), A swiss research team found that 270 mg of green tea extract 3X a day increased metabolic rate by the equivalent of about 79 calories on average and increased the oxidation of fat as the fuel source.

If you do the math, it appears that 79 kcal a day would add up to an extra pound of fat lost every 44 days. Not much, but you’ll take it, right? Hypothetically, that would add up to an extra 8 pounds lost per year.

What advertisements quoting this study don’t tell you is that this and other similar studies did not even measure long term change in body fat percentage or bodyweight. They only measured a 24- hour increase in energy expenditure.

One study which is used as marketing ammunition to claim that wu long tea burns 2.5 times more fat than green tea was based only on a 120-minute increase in energy expenditure! (reminds me of that Mark Twain quote: “There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics.”)

Numerous follow up studies have confirmed the short term increase in metabolism, but the studies are mixed on whether green tea improves weight reduction or maintenance in the long term.

The research IS compelling, but not conclusive.

As for ad claims that say you’ll lose a lot of weight just from drinking green tea… absolute BS! Hopefully the Federal Trade Commission will catch up with these scammers sooner rather than later, as the marketing messages on the Internet are getting louder and bolder every day.

As for health benefits – green tea is certainly a champ. It’s high in antioxidants and there are more than 2,000 research citations about potential health benefits of green tea (not to mention a 5,000 year history of use in China and the far east).

Even if you’re a skeptic, green tea is hard not to like and it’s hard to dispute that it’s a good idea to add green tea to your nutrition program as one part of a well-balanced fitness lifestyle.

But when it comes to claims for large and rapid losses in bodyweight and bodyfat, (especially the wu long tea ads that are currently all over the internet), buyer beware.

The science we do have says that the thermogenic effect of green tea – while very real – is also very small.

Train hard and expect success always,

By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS
www.BurnTheFat.com

If you’ve paid any attention at all to the weight loss industry, chances are you’ve probably heard about some kind of fat burner supplements. The ads that promote these fat burners usually have a very lean model, often with a six-pack claiming incredible fat loss success. These companies would like you to believe that the only way to guarantee fat loss progress is by supplementing your diet with one of their “miracle pills,” and that it is not so much a matter of proper nutrition and hard work.

While I won’t dismiss the fact that there are some ingredients in some “fat burner” products that might help a little bit, I take great displeasure in seeing those kinds of misleading headlines as well as the misleading use of models who are often paid to endorse the product even though they may never have even used it (they’re just models!)

Many “fat burner” companies have been sued by the Federal Trade Commission for false advertising, false claims and falsifying before and after photos.

The best you get is a slight thermogenic effect and possibly some slight appetite suppression. A few products might work through other mechanisms like improving thyroid, but if you forgive me the generalization, I consider the effects of all these “fat burner” products to be minutia. In a previous newsletter, I wrote that in my opinion, 97% of your results come from nutrition and training and maybe you get an extra 3% advantage from supplements.

Just so you know those numbers arent something I just pulled out of thin air, lets take an example:

I have reviewed scientific data that EGCG, the active ingredient in green tea extract, if consumed in enough quantity, could increase thermogenesis / metabolic rate by an average of about 75 calories in 24 hours. Since ephedrine was taken off the market, green tea extract appears in many ephedra-free formulas these days. What is a typical calorie expenditure for an active male in 24 hours? lets say 2700 calories per day. 75/2700 = 2.7%. That slight little extra doesnt hurt, especially when its delivered in a healthful package such as green tea, rather than central nervous system stimulants, but its minutia in the bigger picture. Another way to put this into perspective is to make a list of what other things would burn 75 calories (for 150 lb person:)

walk your dog for 15 minutes

three times a day, walk for 5 minutes at normal casual pace

30 minutes of ironing

bagging leaves and grass clippings for 14 minutes

re arrange your furniture for 10 minutes

wash your car, 15 minutes

vacuuming for 15 minutes

7.2 minutes of walking up stairs (could be spread throughout the day)

Ah yes, but why move your body when you can take the pill and metabolism increases while you sit and watch TV? How about for your health? A body that is not moved, rots away. Unlike a car which only has so many miles on it and wears out from over-use, people are the only “machines” on earth that fall apart from under-use.

Here’s what any good personal trainer will always tell you: No amount of calorie restriction or pill-popping will ever give you FITNESS. It willl never give you STRENGTH. it will never get you MUSCULARITY. It will never give you FUNCTIONALITY. At best it will help you reduce body mass slightly.

On one hand, I’m tempted to say that everything counts and that yes, 75 calories here, and 75 calories there, it ALL adds up, because it does. After you’re exercising regularly and all your fundamentals are in place, details and little things do matter.

I’m simply asking you to put the benefits of any fat burners in proper perspective and realize that (1) there is no “need” for taking them and (2) the claims made in the ads are often erroneous or exagerrated.

My advice on fat burners:

1. NEVER buy a fat burner unless you get independent verification of the claims made for the product.

How do you KNOW they really work? Are you SERIOUSLY going to take the advertisers word for it? Are you SERIOUSLY going to take someone else’s testimonial as fact? Get verification for yourself by going to the pub med data base and looking for research (try www.ReleMed.com too, as their search results are very thorough and relevant and they provide links to the pub med citations).

2. Put it in perspective

With those products that work, such as those providing a small thermogenic effect, put that in perspective as compared to how easily you could burn that many calories with even light exercise like walking or housework. Keep in mind the additional fitness and strength benefits you will obtain from exercise as opposed to doing nothing and popping a pill.

3. See if there are any side effects or health warnings.

With all supplements and especially with prohormones or stronger thermogenics like the ephedrine and caffeine stack, (if you still have access to them), understand the risk to benefit ratio, and be certain you know the dangers and contraindications.

4. Read the label and see if the product contains enough active ingredient to even work.

A classic scam is when a “fat burner”product quotes research that a certain inredient boosts metabolism, which might be true. What they may not tell you is that all the research with positive results used a large dosage of the ingredient, which might not be cheap. So the supplement company includes a “pinch” or “light dusting” of that ingredient just so they can say it’s in the bottle, even though its nothing more than “label decoration.” Then they have the audacity to invoke the research studies in their advertisements when the amount of the ingredient in their product is no where near what was used in the research!

5. Proprietary blend scam.

Some companies, DONT LET YOU SEE how much ingredient is in the product formula, because it contains multiple ingredients and they say their formula is a “trade secret” aka “proprietary”, so they list WHAT is in the product but not HOW MUCH. If you don’t know how much is in there then how are we (the consumers) supposed to get independent confirmation of the facts and analyze whether this product is any good?

6. Make sure there is human research, not just rodent research.

In many cases, advertisements cite studies on rats and mice as “proof” under the assumption that the product will produce the same results in humans. Animal research is an important part of the scientific method, as it is often used to help find areas of research where human study should be pursued, or in the other direction, to trace back the mechanism that makes something work. However, for obesity research in particular, a positive finding in rats does not mean the same thing will happen in humans.

7. Look for more than one human study.

Consider trying a supplement after it has human research that has been replicated by different research groups which are not industry-sponsored. My policy is that I will usually only give a “buy” rating to a supplement when a product has an intitial well-designed human controlled trial published and then similar research has been replicated by another research group that is not supplement-industry funded.

Actually, I think it’s a good thing that nutrition and supplement companies fund and sponsor some of the research. They should. They should not only back up their claims with published clinical trials, they should share some of the cost of this expensive research.

However, a basic principle of the scientific method is replication. Other researchers should be able to duplicate the findings. Therefore, while the funding source does not necessarily prove bias, if there is only one study available on a supplement and it is company or industry sponsored, I usually take it with a grain of salt and put an asterisk next to it while I wait for confirmation from another study. (You might be surprised at how IN-frequently this type of confirmation occurs).

Do you REALLY need “more” than nutrition and exercise??????

Now, when you weigh the fact that even the products with research backing them only help a little, with the fact that many of the ads lie to you about research, exagerrate claims and hide vital information about ingredients, and with the fact that you can do a few more minutes of exercise per day and get the same results for free, how enthusiastic are you about fat burners? Yeah, that’s why I’m not real excited about them either and based on the fact that I use no drugs and no “fat burner” supplements and I compete in bodybuilding – very successfully – I’d say that the assertion, “it takes more than nutrition and exercise to get six pack abs” is patently false.

Train hard and expect success,
